A little about me
I love to talk almost as much as write - which is great, unless I need to get something done! :) Cory, (picture above) won a Name A Character contest I ran at a convention in Cedar Rapids. He got to name a new character in Before the Crow, then went as far as to cosplay that character at a number of events! Talk about awesome. I run these contests all the time, so if you stop by to check out my books, or simply say hi, you just might have the opportunity to show up in one of my future stories. All the money I collect from contests goes to charity, just so you know!
My name is Aaron Bunce, and I am a writer. I started writing in elementary school, but who hasn't? I said I wouldn't lead with that, as it seems every two authors do, but I couldn't resist. Seriously, I did start writing in elementary school, I have the stories my parents saved to prove it! And they were awesome!
My teachers sent me to a voluntary writer’s workshop held at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. This really was the beginning of my passion for literature. I continued to write my own short stories, but spent much of my youth reading. My father had a sizable collection of science fiction, so from very early on I was weaned on the works of Robert H. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, C.S. Lewis and J R.R Tolkien, just to name a few. As I got older, I discovered new genres and new favorite authors - enter Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, and the dynamic duo of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. Poof - the bedrock of my literary identity, and more than a few reasons why I decided to write fantasy, science fiction, and horror as an adult.
Out of High School I firmly believed that I was destined to become a police officer. Yet, when I graduated college (the first time) in 2004, I wavered. A short time later I started writing what was to be my first novel. Although I never finished the project it nonetheless reaffirmed my passion for writing (I should say rekindled as fire was definitely involved). In 2012 I read Eragon, by Christopher Paolini. I was inspired that a fifteen year old boy was not only able to finish such a quality project, but eventually got it published. After putting down Paolini’s book I started working on a new project of my own. Six months later I had completed the rough draft of my first novel, and another year of drafts and editing, and I had a book I was proud to call my own.
While my first novel, Within, was completed and independently published, I felt that I needed to gain not only credibility as a writer, but polish to my writing voice. So in March of 2014 I enrolled at Southern New Hampshire University, and started studying English with a focus in fiction writing. I graduated in December of 2016 and feel that this investment in time was well spent! I invested my time with writers workshops, book signings, conventions, and author events, meeting some of the coolest, more imaginative people in the world. I love readers and writers, spending hours talking story structure, about people's favorite characters, but mostly, the books that shaped their lives!
My goal as a writer is to offer genre fiction that breaks away from some of the stereotypes, cliches, and overused tropes that plague so many fantasy, science fiction, and horror novels. I want to introduce fresh, relatable characters with worlds that feel new and unexplored. I crave an out-of-the-box experience, and likewise want to provide that to readers as well.
